Bitwise directs $233,000 to Bitcoin open-source development
Bitwise has donated $233,000 to the nonprofit OpenSats to support open-source projects and maintain critical infrastructure across the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Donation specifics
This payment forms part of Bitwise’s pledge to allocate 10% of profits from its spot bitcoin ETF for open-source network development.
Recipients and prior grants
Alongside OpenSats, Bitwise funds organizations such as Brink and the Bitcoin Policy Institute to support policy research and developer resources.
Earlier this year the firm directed comparable sums as grants to contributors of Bitcoin Core to support ongoing protocol work and maintenance.
Purpose and funding mechanism
Bitwise said donations come from company profits and are not charged as additional fees to ETF investors, reflecting its interest in base-asset stability.
The company intends these funds to allow key developers to focus on improving Bitcoin’s security, privacy and scalability without seeking alternative income sources.
Expected impact
Supporters of the initiative expect directed funding to reduce developers’ need for external employment and help ensure continuity of essential protocol maintenance work.
