Google to Invest up to $40 Billion in Anthropic
Google has agreed to provide financial and technical support to Anthropic, with commitments contingent on performance targets.
Deal terms
Under the agreement, Google will invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic over a multi-year period, with staged funding tranches.
The initial payment will be $10 billion, based on a preliminary company valuation of $350 billion.
An additional $30 billion of capital is conditional on Anthropic meeting specified key performance indicators tied to product and deployment milestones.
Market participants have placed Anthropic's valuation above $800 billion ahead of a potential public offering, reflecting investor expectations.
Compute resources and hardware
Google Cloud will supply Anthropic with up to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity for a five-year term to support model training and inference.
A central element of the arrangement is access to Google's TPU accelerators, presented as one of the few large-scale alternatives to Nvidia hardware amid supply constraints.
TPU chips are Google-designed accelerators optimized for machine-learning workloads, intended to provide sustained throughput for large AI models.
Competitive dynamics
Despite the partnership, Google remains attentive to Anthropic's growing position in AI-assisted coding, where the startup has established notable traction.
Provision of capital and cloud capacity formalizes collaboration while underscoring the competitive tensions between a major cloud provider and an independent AI developer.
