Expert Proposes $1 Billion Fund to Support Ethereum

Former Ethereum Foundation researcher Dankrad Feist proposed creating a new organization with dedicated funding and decision-making powers. The plan aims to secure long-term resources to support the Ethereum protocol and ecosystem development.

Proposal details

Feist noted that the Ethereum Foundation controls less than 0.1% of the circulating ETH supply and currently does not benefit from staking rewards or protocol fees. He argues this structure reduces the foundation's ability to finance sustained development and public goods critical to network health.

To address the gap, Feist suggested establishing an entity with at least $1 billion in capital, partly financed by redirected staking revenues or other on-chain income streams. The proposal envisions a governance and funding mechanism that would allocate resources toward infrastructure, research, and coordination across the ecosystem.

Community reaction

The idea has generated debate within the Ethereum community, with some participants welcoming clearer funding for public goods and long-term projects. Others expressed concern that concentrated funding and formalized influence could steer Ethereum toward a more corporate governance model, altering its decentralized character.

Feist's suggestion prompted discussions about trade-offs between stable financing and maintaining broad, permissionless governance. Participants continue to evaluate how any new structure would interact with existing protocol governance and stakeholder incentives.
