Japanese corporate pension fund to invest in crypto

Nationwide Business Corporate Pension Fund will allocate 1% of its assets to crypto assets through a third-party hedge fund portfolio.

Allocation and scale

The fund manages 21.3 billion yen, roughly $130 million, and covers pension programs for about 1,200 small and medium-sized companies nationwide.

Investment route

The planned exposure will be obtained indirectly: the pension fund will invest in a large hedge fund that includes a diversified crypto allocation.

The announcement specifies no individual tokens; publications describe the holding as a diversified crypto component within the hedge fund’s strategy.

Significance for conservative capital

For corporate pension assets that typically prioritise capital preservation, even a 1% weighting represents a measurable shift toward digital-asset exposure.

This step is among the earliest instances of a Japanese corporate pension formally incorporating digital assets into its investment mix, signalling cautious institutional interest.
