Wrench attacks caused over $30 million in losses in 2026

According to Chainalysis, criminals forcibly took more than $30 million from crypto holders so far in 2026.

Overall figures and attribution

Chainalysis reports that attackers attempted to extort a total of $107 million, though some funds never reached perpetrators or were frozen.

Investigators have documented 46 incidents this year compared with 40 for the same period in 2025, indicating an uptick in reported events.

Success rates and dynamics

The share of successful wrench attacks has declined sharply, reported at 26% in 2026 versus 49% in 2025 and 67% in 2024, according to the analysis.

Monthly attack frequency rose from 1.9 to 4.6 incidents on average, reflecting both more attempts and improved reporting in affected jurisdictions.

Geography and causes

France recorded the highest number of publicly known cases at 30, while local authorities have documented more than 70 related incidents overall.

Analysts link the surge in targeted coercion to a 2024 data breach, in which a tax official allegedly sold a dossier with addresses, balances and phone numbers.

Changes in tactics

The proportion of attacks involving home intrusions rose from 26% in 2023 to 37% in the most recent reporting period.

Relatives and acquaintances of crypto holders now comprise about a quarter of global targets and more than 40% of cases reported in France.

Between 77% and 100% of victims in various countries are local residents, suggesting prior reconnaissance and local intelligence gathering by perpetrators.

Implications

The Chainalysis data indicate a shift toward more frequent, locally focused physical coercion against crypto users, with a declining success rate but growing attempt volumes.
