Bhutan launches crypto-backed visa for digital nomads
The government of Bhutan launched a digital-nomad visa priced at $2,800, allowing holders to reside and travel across Bhutan for 12 months.
Visa conditions
Applicants must deposit $10,000 into a new state cryptocurrency named TER, a prerequisite for visa approval and issuance.
The visa permits a single continuous stay of twelve months and is intended for remote workers who can support themselves during that period.
TER token and backing
Authorities stated that the TER token is issued on the Solana blockchain and is tied to physical gold held in state storage facilities.
The government says the token’s value is secured by allocated gold reserves, and token holders receive accounting that reflects the bullion backing.
Refunds and state assurances
Officials have promised that deposited funds will be returned to the applicant upon departure from the country, subject to the conditions of the program.
Details on timing, procedure and any conversion between TER and fiat currencies were described in the program documents issued by the government.
Mechanics and notes
Issuing the token on Solana indicates the use of an established public blockchain for transfers and custody records, according to the announcement.
The program links residency permissions directly to a crypto-based deposit, creating a coordinated mechanism between immigration rules and the state-backed token.
