SEC Adds Digital Assets to Strategic Plan Through 2030

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has explicitly included digital assets in its strategic plan through 2030.

Regulatory objectives

The commission said that blockchain and cryptocurrencies have potential to modernize the financial system and require clear oversight mechanisms.

Among the SEC’s main initiatives is the formal determination of how digital assets fit within existing securities laws and definitions.

Planned measures

  • Clarify the legal status of digital assets under securities legislation and provide guidance for market participants.
  • Regulate operations of crypto exchanges, custodial providers and staking services to improve investor protections.
  • Create a framework to support issuance and distribution of tokenized assets within regulated markets.
  • Address and attempt to resolve jurisdictional overlaps between the SEC and the CFTC.

Enforcement and technology

The commission intends to emphasize anti-fraud work rather than relying primarily on courtroom enforcement strategies to shape compliance.

SEC officials also plan to explore applications of artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies to boost the agency’s supervisory and analytical capabilities.
