Blender 5.3 Alpha Adds Native Splat Import Support
Blender 5.3 alpha introduces native support for splats, allowing direct import of PLY files with a 3DGS data type flag.
Import options and point cloud mode
Imported PLY files are marked as 3DGS in the Data panel, and users can switch views to a point‑cloud representation for direct inspection.
The new workflow removes the need for intermediate conversion tools when working with splat datasets and streamlines asset transfer into Blender scenes.
Practical testing and color rendering
A test scene previously prepared in Postshot loaded and rendered inside Blender, confirming compatibility with existing splat assets from that pipeline.
However, the scene’s colors appeared noticeably washed out compared with the original; this may require adjustments to import parameters or material settings.
Rendering performance
Rendering was switched from the lightweight EEVEE engine to Cycles in GPU mode to evaluate visual fidelity and compute performance under load.
The renderer was configured to use a dedicated GPU device identified as 4090; viewport interaction showed occasional stuttering but remained usable for review and tweaking.
Available test resources
Collections of splat test files are hosted by community repositories such as SuperSplat, which provide sample datasets for validation and experimentation.
Support for native splat assets in Blender 5.3 alpha aims to simplify the pipeline for point‑based geometry and encourage wider testing by artists and researchers.
